How to Choose the Perfect Coffee Table for Your Perth Living Room
The coffee table is the unsung centrepiece of the living room. Get it right and the whole space settles into place. Get it wrong and you’ll spend years stubbing toes and apologising to guests. Here’s how to pick one properly.
Step 1 — Pick a shape that fits your traffic flow
If you have kids, pets or a tight living room, choose a round coffee table — no sharp corners. If your room is long and your sofa is straight, a rectangular table follows the line and gives you more usable surface. A nested set earns its place in smaller Perth apartments where you need flexible surface space without permanent footprint.
Step 2 — Get the size right
The rule of thumb most designers use:
- Coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa.
- Leave around 40–45 cm of walking space between the table and the sofa.
- Table height should sit roughly level with your sofa cushions — usually 40–45 cm high.
Most of our coffee tables sit at 45 cm, which works for the majority of contemporary lounge suites.
Step 3 — Choose your material story
The material defines the mood:
- Marble top with gold or silver base — timeless, slightly formal, very luxury.
- Tempered glass with stainless steel — keeps a small room feeling open; the glass disappears.
- Solid wood + steel — warmer, grounds a modern space.
Step 4 — Mind the gold/silver consistency
If your sofa has gold detailing, your coffee table’s base should be gold too. Mixing finishes works occasionally but it usually looks like an accident. Pick a metal and commit across the room.
Step 5 — Don’t forget styling
Three rules: a tall thing (vase, books), a flat thing (tray), and a textural thing (candle, sculpture). Vary heights. Don’t crowd it — leave at least half the surface clear so the table itself can breathe.
